What is Small Batch Craft Roasting?

You will see us describe what we do as craft roasting. And a few people have asked me what it means.

Some coffee roasters take a coffee and will roast it Dark and roast it Medium and give two different names to appease those who are shopping by roast level.

However coffee at different roast levels has different flavors. Roasting in small batches gives us more control for an even roast. When you open a bag of coffee there should be consistency in the color on each bean and from bean to bean.

For an Ethiopian coffee rich in berry notes – roasting it dark would take that berry note and make it sour. As a medium roast, the berry has great flavor.

When we get a new coffee we roast it at three levels to see which level really brings out the best flavor of that particular coffee. From there we may even tweak it further going up or down 5 degrees to get it exactly right.

So when we say craft roasted we mean we roast the bean we have to bring out its best qualities.

We like to urge our customers, especially those who think they “only like dark roasts” to try a variety of our coffees.

One easy way to try different roast levels and coffee origins are one of our coffee samplers. We have our six set sampler which has enough coffee to brew a full 10 cup pot. There are three roast levels, four single origins, and two of our blends.

Our full-size Coffee Gift Set gives a variety of roasts and regions to enjoy. A Dark roast Sumatra, Medium Dark Peru and Medium Guatemala to get the flavors of three growing regions and roast levels.
