What is Pour Over Coffee?

There’s nothing quite like that first sip of coffee in the morning to awaken your senses and spark your day into motion. For many coffee lovers, pour over coffee is more than just a method—it’s a mindful ritual that turns a simple drink into a full sensory experience.

What is Pour Over Coffee?

Pour over coffee isn’t a passing fad—it’s a brewing tradition that’s stood the test of time, especially in Japan where it remains a favorite at both homes and cafes. Using a cone-shaped filter (paper or reusable) placed over your mug, hot water is poured slowly over ground coffee, allowing gravity to gently draw out the rich flavors.

This manual method is incredibly versatile and doesn’t require electricity. Whether you're brewing at home, work, or in the great outdoors, a pour over coffee dripper gives you café-quality coffee anywhere.

Why Pour Over Coffee is Worth the Hype

1. It's Better for the Environment

Switching to a paperless pour over filter means fewer trees cut down and less waste. Even better? Our eco-friendly filters allow more oils and flavors to pass through, giving you a bolder, more complex cup.

How to Brew Pour Over Coffee with the Java Planet Dripper

Step 1: Heat Your Water

Use filtered water heated to 195–205°F. Let it sit for about 60 seconds after boiling to reach optimal temperature.

Step 2: Measure & Grind Your Coffee

Grind your beans fresh, aiming for a medium to medium-fine texture. A burr grinder (like our Ceramic Burr Manual Grinder) offers the best consistency. Use 2 tablespoons of ground coffee per 6 ounces of water.

Step 3: Prep Your Filter and Add Coffee  Place your dripper over a mug and spoon in your fresh grounds.

Step 4: Bloom the Coffee  Pour just enough hot water to saturate the grounds, then wait a few seconds. Watch the coffee bloom and inhale the rich aroma.

Step 5: The Pour  Slowly pour the remaining hot water over the grounds in a spiral motion. Let it drip naturally into your mug. Your fresh pour over coffee is now ready!

Step 6: Cleanup  Rinse the dripper thoroughly or place it on the top rack of your dishwasher. Don’t toss the grounds—reuse them as garden fertilizer or a DIY body scrub!
