Tampa, Florida, July 1, 2015 — Java Planet Organic Coffee Roasters was proudly recognized with a Sustainable Business Award at the University of Tampa’s Vaughn Center on June 10. This prestigious honor was presented by the Sustany Foundation, the Sustainable Business Coalition of Tampa Bay, Inc., and the University of Tampa Center for Ethics.
Now in its 7th year, the Sustainable Business Awards celebrate for-profit businesses that embrace the “triple bottom line”—balancing people, planet, and profit through sustainable practices. Java Planet's commitment to ethical sourcing, environmental health, and community well-being set it apart as a leader in the Tampa Bay business community.
“We are very proud to be recipients of a 2015 Tampa Sustainability Award,” said Jennifer Simmons, who co-founded Java Planet with her husband Mike. “This award validates our mission—to be a local, organic, fair trade coffee company that gives back to the individual, the farmer, and the planet. Businesses can be both profitable and sustainable. It’s all about committing to a bottom line that reflects a greater worldview.”
Java Planet’s business model is built on transparency and sustainability. The company holds certifications with: \
Americert International (Certified Organic)
Shade Grown
SMBC Bird Friendly
Their focus on small-batch roasting ensures high-quality coffee while supporting biodiversity and reducing environmental impact.
Now, a decade after receiving the award (2025), Java Planet continues to lead in sustainable coffee sourcing. The company has expanded its offerings to include Smithsonian Bird Friendly Certified coffees, widely regarded as the gold standard in environmentally responsible coffee farming.
What makes this even more meaningful is that two of the farms Java Planet had been working with earned their Bird Friendly certification after partnering with the company. Java Planet is proud to have supported these growers throughout their journey and remains committed to helping more farms achieve the highest levels of environmental stewardship and wildlife protection.
Sustainability specialist Barbra C. Anderson nominated Java Planet for the award. “I was moved by their mission to educate people on the importance of buying and consuming organic products,” she said. “Jennifer and Mike Simmons are committed to health, education, and sustainability. They are good people doing good work—and I wanted to share their story.”
Java Planet uses only 100% certified organic beans. Their coffees are free from synthetic chemicals, fertilizers, and pesticides—not just during farming, but throughout the entire supply chain, including shipping and roasting. Additionally, 90% of their Arabica beans are Fair Trade certified, ensuring that farmers receive fair compensation and operate in safe, ethical working conditions.
